Paper Walls

I am broken

and so are you.

Together,

we are two

shattered halves

of a whole

that used to

be.

I watch as you

fall apart

and feed your

addictions,

your pain.

I see your

crumbling façade

that blocks me out.

You build walls

made from

five cent deposits

and shiny glass bottles

and you lock me out.

I see you through

the cracks

in your temporary

walls,

I see your tears

that float underneath

your skin

and I see your need,

your love,

scratching at the

glass,

hoping to escape.

I, too, am built,

brick by brick,

of temporary

materials.

I cement my paper

walls with ink

believing

that they will become

strong,

sturdy,

impermeable.

Like you.

I wonder if we could

build some walls together.

Could we stack

our glass,

and metal,

and paper,

and ink

together

and build a home

that could withstand

a hurricane,

a tornado,

an apocalypse generated

from our own broken

hearts?

I see you holding

your pain in your hands,

and my fingers

strain to take it,

to wash it from your eyes.

I wait for you to

grasp my fear,

insecurity,

tragedy,

loneliness,

pain

and wipe it from

my fragile heart.

I wait in my paper

room covered in ink

and write on walls

built for only

your fists to fight through.

  1. Incredibly sad you think your love/life built on indestructible foundation but it is as thin as paper walls and house built on shifting sand one breeze from the ills of fortune and it all comes tumbling like house of cards
