For Miles

These wide open spaces
where you can see for miles
on a clear day.
So bright,
your eyes burn with the sunlight.
Sparse trees–
one,
two,
three.
Sharp blues so razor edged
stand in harmonious contrast
with the honey brown fields
stretching for miles.
Sunsets
where gashes of red
collide with royal purples
and bursts of orange juice skies.
These empty spaces,
so flat and fielded,
without definition
and home.
I’m moving farther from the trees
and their heady pine scents
burnished with campfire smoke
and spring rain.
These wide places,
lonely spaces
where I’m reminded
of all the ways
we are apart.
