If I Were You

If I were you,
I would wonder
what had happened
since I left.
I would picture
tall buildings
and new streetlights
and strange faces
loving me.

If I were you,
I’d imagine
our hands
sifting through
white sand
in search
of the perfect shell.
I’d look
at our pictures
and remember
the sound
of my voice
as I whispered love
under the stars.

If I were you,
I’d miss me
like I miss you.

If I were you,
I’d call.

But I’m not you.

I’m not that lonely boy
who found himself
adrift
in life imagined
differently.
I’m not that man
who’s too afraid
to leap.

No.

I’m just this
lonely girl
who waits
for words
she can never
hope to hear.
I’m just
this memory
you can never
hope to forget.

I’m not sure if I like this one. The pronouns seem all wrong. Oh well! I’ve never taken a post down, so it stays, wonky pronouns or not. 🙂
