Footsteps,

two by two,

measured in the sand,

the snow,

the dust beneath

our toes.

Handprints,

two by two,

set in paint,

in plaster,

in the mirror images

of our hearts.

She wandered

long and far

questing for

absolution,

restitution,

constitution

of her longing,

only to determine

there is no

resolution

to a heart jilted

by a lover’s lies.

Yet,

footsteps

and

handprints

still remain,

frozen in her memory,

built like mountains

with formidable crossings.

The snow caps

and the deserts

find room inside her heart,

poke and prod and elbow

their way into

existence.

She’s drying up,

folding up,

collapsing

into uncharted waters

where only

his face remains,

only his laugh

belongs.

She’s alone

and beside him

in every moment

she breathes.

And,

the footsteps

he left on her soul,

the handprints

he placed on her body,

sing out,

pleading for execution.
