Paper Nights

The stars
were never brighter
than when I saw them
in your eyes,
and my silly metaphors
outnumber the infinity
of these distant places
that seem closer
than you ever could.

Before I knew the sky,
I memorized the constellation
of freckles
on your chest,
and now I search
for those phantom stars
in skies you’ve never seen
because you have only ever been
my north,
my compass,
my star map
etched on paper nights.

I decided to attempt NaPoWriMo beginning with day two. The prompt was Stars. Enjoy!

  1. “Before I knew the sky,

I love the sheer unapologetic intimacy in these lines. Wonderful poem!
