Statues in the Dark

Our departures
stood still
against the trees,
waiting for a shift
in thought,
but we took them
as statues
instead of change
and stepped around
their stoic silences.

You slice through me
with your stagnant words,
never moving
or shaping your pieces,
and yet I want you still.

In these dark nights
eclipsed by sunshine memories,
I have you in these fingers,
in these footprints
on the sand,
and I wonder
how I can still feel
your clutches
woven into my hair.

Sweet words were
never ours
but only mine
when you whispered,
and adoration
can only get you so far
when pain is always
one letter away.

This was written in response to the NaPoWriMo prompt to write a love poem without the flowers and rainbows or the use of the word love. Enjoy! 🙂
