Two

What does it really mean to be two?
To have two sides,
two hearts,
two sets of parts,
never touching,
never speaking,
just these two separate lives
inside the same skin?

I am two.
My outside doesn’t fit my inside
and they despise each other
for their desires–
one wanting now
and the other wanting then.
How do I bake cupcakes for my niece
and then write love poems
about the color of your eyes?

How can I be one again?
One choice,
one love,
one future,
instead of watching these two halves
blast each other
until there’s not

two

or

one

but

none.
