Giving Up

We must always
give up
the things we love,
be it time
or distance
or frailty.
We always lose
in the end.
This pain of losing
seems better
than constant reminders
of wanting
what’s in front of you,
of knowing
the taste of her lips
but never being able
to quench your thirst.
This is why we let go,
why we choose memory
over daily reminders.
Seeing him
walk up your driveway
to say hello,
knowing you must
never run to him,
to whisper your love
in his ear,
is agony
compared the memory
of his last smile.
I guess what they say
is right.
You can never
just be friends
with someone
you’re in love with.
