We lie.

We lie.

We walk around
in zombie shoes
and smile
like it’s real,
like it’s not just
another day
pretending,
like it’s not
slowly killing us.

How do we know
we’re ever truly happy?
Is it just a personality thing
to wonder, “what if?”
Or is it a human thing,
like it’s built into
our DNA or something?

So we lie
and say we’re happy
but we never really know
if it’s real,
never know
if it’s a mirage of joy
or a front painted
to display faux contentment.

We lie.

We post updates,
upload pictures,
filter our lives
for audience enjoyment
when underneath
we cry at night,
we dream of other places and people,
we secret ourselves from the world,
and they believe us.
They contrast their lives with ours
and cry at night
because of filtered pictures
that only prove

we lie.

  1. Great work today.

Is this to do with the lies that come about with technological change? Or something deeper, to do with acceptance and social structure?

    • Perhaps both. As technology changes, so do we. We morph our ideals and morals to fit the world in which we live. Today, it seems that we cover the truth with shiny photos and quips, so it’s not necessarily lying except that it is. We compare and juxtapose our lives to others’ and then feel bad that ours don’t measure up. We hide for acceptance and to prove that our lives are just as good. I guess that’s what I meant. 🙂

Thank you for the compliment! Glad you liked it! 🙂
