In The Rearview

You were my beginning,
my first steps into
what it meant to love,
to writhe in
the pain and joy

of it all.

I look back
in dumb wonder
at how I couldn’t have seen
the right
in all the “wrong” steps.

Now I know what it’s like
to grow old,

to see

what I didn’t notice before,
to take off those tinted glasses
and really absorb what I’ve lost.

You were my beginning,
my peace,
my home.
I still breathe you
in between the seconds
ticking out on the clocks
that won’t stop spinning,

and time keeps pulling our strings.

We are mere marionettes,
twisted and turned
by fate
and hours
and months
and all that lay between.

I see you in the rearview,
waving,
smiling,
hoping.
Standing at my beginning
and also my end.
