And So We Are

We think that we’re alone

so we are.

We drown in emptiness
that isn’t really there
because we can’t figure out
how we got here
let alone how to get out.

It’s dangerous–
because we don’t wear it
on our faces.
We cover ourselves
with words and pretense
hoping no one
will recognize
the deep pit
of alone
in which we swim,
the mire
where we wade,
our hopes dangling
by the frayed ends
of threadbare friends
who can’t see us anyway.

that’s where you are
because you can’t see
the trees inside your forest.

because the reaching hands
aren’t the ones
you’re waiting for
and you’ve rejected those
too many times anyway.

because that’s what we are
until we find the strength
to choose something different.
